This class will begin with a discussion about what you think history is, what it's for, who it's for, who makes it, why make it, and who benefits from it, and who does not benefit from it. Also, is there a method for doing it properly? Hmm.... Let's talk about that.
First Unit: How Times do Change
AOI: Human Ingenuity, Health and Social Education
Guiding Question: How does technological and social progress affect society?
Significant Concept: You are to determine this after completing this unit
Your task: Over the next week you will be working with your group, focused on a specific region of the world, in order to determine what was happening in the latter half of the 19th century and into the early 20th century, what was significant about the changes that were occurring, and some of the positive and negative consequences arising from these changes.
You will be put into a group of 3 to 4 students. You will first put all of your group work onto a google.doc and make sure that it is saved. Later, you will format this work onto your page within the wiki. You are expected to conduct research and make notes; you must also find images about these topics for your country. Finally, don't forget to fill in the table (found in a link below) and then add a link to it or upload it to your wiki page.
Period to examine: 1850 - 1914
Regions of Study: Britain, The Americas, Russia, Africa, China, Japan, Germany
Questions to consider in your research:
Class 1 of research
What are some positive and negative consequences of technological progress and industrialization in the region you have been assigned?
Is your region technologically advanced for it’s time or not? Why do you think it is advanced or not? Do you think the society is operating effectively without interference?
Find primary and secondary sources that support your arguments.
(Questions to consider: What is progress? Who defines progress? What constitutes change? Change for who, by who? Who benefits and who loses in times of change?)
Here is a little summary of some inventions and effects of the Industrial Revolution up to 1850: Industrial Rev:1760-1850
Class 2 of research
What is the state of political and social development of your region? What are the positive and negative consequences of revolutions and imperialism that occurred in your region? Provide examples of the political and social changes these created?
How would you rank these regions in terms of their political and social development compared to another state or region? Are they ahead or behind?
(Questions to consider: What is social development? What is political development? What is imperialism? What factors are you using to define what is "ahead" or "behind"? Who is defining the benchmark or standard of what is civilized? Is this justified?)
